The first video is Solfège 1.1., a tonal pattern exercise using the first four notes of the major scale and the Latin syllables for sight singing. Listen to the video and think about the following questions. We will discuss these examples in the next session.

  • Listen to this a minimum of 10 times. 
  • Find some time and a quiet place where you can sing the Latin syllables. Even quietly but vocalize them.
  • Listen actively to the contour of each line. Rising and falling.  
  • Do you hear any patterns? Repeating lines? 

The second example, Solfège 1.2 is an extended version.

  • Listen to this and try to sing along without looking at the words so much. 
  • Do you recognize any note patterns?
  • Is there a clear rhythmic pulse? 
  • Which notes would you emphasize if this were a song?

Amazing Grace w/Speech Spectrum

  • Watch this video and listen for the vowels. Try and match the speech sounds to the spectrum in the video. 
  • Are the vowels on peaks or in troughs?
  • Watch and listen for the consonants. Are they peaks or troughs? Are they audible?
  • Listen for the rhythmic pulse. Is it clear?
  • Are there any moments where the voice gets louder or more intense? 
  • Listen for any shape or arc in the melody. 
  • Is there any vibrato?
